Excuses

Sarah Clark, CSA

I hear this a lot:

“I’m not in my twenties anymore…”

“I’m not skinny enough…”

“I don’t look like Brad Pitt or Scarlet Johanson…”

And on and on and on.

Unfortunately for the people who are making excuses out of fear of failing, these comments all have simple solutions.

“I’m not in my twenties anymore…”

Please name a movie, TV show, or commercial that exclusively had just young people in it. Even Mean Girls had parents and teachers. Such a movie has never made it on my radar.

Film/TV/Commercials usually aspire to imitate reality. Creating a world that is exclusively made of twenty year olds would alienate audiences. There has to be different ages to play different roles. If a 22 year old were playing an 80 year old it would be a joke and your audience would check out.

Now, if you’re saying “I don’t want to start acting because I’m not in my twenties.” I understand that you may be a little nervous. A lot of the people who will be in the same novice boat will be significantly younger. You have a whole life of experiences they don’t have though. You’ll be able to understand deeper emotions and tap into things that young people can’t. There, you have an advantage.

“I’m not skinny enough…”

This is exactly like that age thing. Everyone in movies can’t be the same size and shape. Will the lead usually be a skinny hot girl? Probably. Is that the only role in the film? No.

Yeah, most people expect successful actors to be skinny and hot. Most people also expect firemen to be ripped. Not all of them are but they still do an amazing job. The same goes for acting. We are reflecting reality. There are pudgy people. There are super tall people. There are pint sized people. Having a cast that all looks identical will turn your audience off.

If you’re that upset about your weight - too thin or too fat - then change it. If that’s the only thing holding you back, then please, take the leap to be happier with your body.

“I don’t look like Brad Pitt or Scarlett Johansson…”

That’s fine. We already have those guys.

Let’s face it - none of us are going to look like Brad Pitt. That’s a bummer, I know, but it’s the truth. That’s just how it goes. That’s fine though because if they want Brad Pitt they’ll get in touch with him.

You know who they don’t have yet? You. You look like you and that’s enough. Looking like someone else isn’t going to be the thing that gets you cast. Having talent, having your audition together and acting like a professional will.

If you’re looking for reasons not to succeed you’ll find a sea them. Push past it.

Good luck out there!
